About Dover Motor Speedway
For more than 50 years, Dover Motor Speedway has welcomed racing fans, concertgoers and visitors from across the country to Delaware's premier entertainment destination. Known around the world as The Monster Mile, the Speedway has built a reputation as one of the most challenging and respected venues in all of motorsports.
The green flag first waved at Dover on July 6, 1969, when NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty captured victory in the Mason-Dixon 300. Since then, generations of racing's biggest stars have battled on the Speedway's high-banked oval, creating unforgettable moments and adding to the rich history of one of NASCAR's most iconic tracks.
Today, Dover Motor Speedway is owned by Speedway Motorsports and continues to host major sporting and entertainment events, welcoming fans from throughout the Mid-Atlantic and beyond.
Why Is It Called The Monster Mile?
The nickname wasn't earned by accident.
Dover's one-mile concrete oval has long been considered one of the toughest tests in racing. Drivers face a demanding combination of a concrete racing surface, 24 degrees of banking and high speeds that leave little room for error. Over the years, competitors have learned that The Monster Mile can reward the best performances while quickly punishing mistakes.
The track's reputation for intensity, toughness and unpredictability led to its now-famous nickname, which has become synonymous with Dover Motor Speedway itself.
Meet Miles the Monster
No visit to Dover Motor Speedway is complete without meeting Miles the Monster, the most recognizable mascots in all of motorsports.
Built in 2008 as part of the Speedway's Monster Mile branding initiative, Miles represents the challenge drivers face every time they compete at Dover. Standing an impressive 46 feet tall in Victory Plaza, the giant monster famously holds a full-size race car in one hand, symbolizing the track's reputation for testing even the sport's greatest competitors.
Over the years, Miles has become a fan favorite and one of NASCAR's most photographed landmarks. Whether you're visiting for a race, a concert or a special event, a photo with Miles is a must.
A NASCAR Tradition
Dover Motor Speedway has been a fixture on the NASCAR schedule for decades and is one of only a select group of tracks to host more than 100 NASCAR Cup Series races.
Many of the sport's biggest names have celebrated victories at The Monster Mile, including Richard Petty, David Pearson, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Busch and numerous other NASCAR legends.
Among them, Jimmie Johnson holds the record for the most NASCAR Cup Series wins at Dover with 11 victories, a testament to both his talent and the difficulty of mastering the Speedway's unique layout.
More Than Racing
While NASCAR remains at the heart of Dover Motor Speedway, the facility has evolved into a year-round destination for entertainment and community events.
From major concerts and festivals to family-friendly events such as Laps for Charity and festivals, the Speedway continues to create memorable experiences for guests of all ages.
Located in Delaware's capital city, Dover Motor Speedway is within easy driving distance of Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., New Jersey and New York, making it one of the most accessible major sports venues on the East Coast.
